We designed our own magical bubbles and then made them come to life using the Quiver App.
Room 13, 7, 8 and 9 went for an overnight camp at Waitawheta, just out of Waihi. Our adventures began with a visit to the Bird Gardens in Katikati and then onto camp. We explored the local stream to cool down and then played on the adventure playground. What fun it was feeding 130 children and parents, no problem with Camp Mum Liz Wilde on the job. After a fun night of singing and games and an early morning we visited the Bullswool Farm. A great place to go and learn about the animals. The last adventure was a ride on the train back to Waihi. Thanks to all help from the parents and what wonderful children we had. Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than YOU! Every Friday the Junior classes get together for an assembly. This is a chance to share the work that they have been doing in class, sing some songs and celebrate any achievements. This week it was Room 13s turn to lead it, they did a great job reading and organising the running of it.
Welcome Back
Your child starting back at school is an exciting time in your child’s life; moving on to new a class and friends. The information on our class website is designed to help you and your child adjust to school as easily as possible. If you have any worries or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Megan Coombes [email protected] The Junior class is designed to provide a safe and happy environment for your child to begin his/her journey into learning. Morning Routine: children need to bring their book bag inside and put their reader in the box by the door. They then need to put their book bag in their desk and put down their chair. Finally they need to write their name on the computer and board. Reading: children will bring a book home every night, Monday – Thursday and their Poem/letterland books for the weekend. These are to promote a love of reading and the written word. Make it a positive experience – lots of praise; tell them the word if they don’t know it; encourage them to look at the pictures for clues and to point to each word as they read. It is my job to teach them to read and your job to tell them how well they are doing! Encourage use of the ‘magic finger’. Developmental or ‘Choosing Time’: this takes place several times a week in the afternoon and is an intergral part of a Junior Programme. It involves providing the children with lots of stimulating creative choices and supervising them while they explore their creativity. Research shows it to be very important to your child’s overall development, enhancing language, creativity and social skills. If you are ever early, please feel free to help with cleanup! Swimming: Swimming will be in Term 1 and 4 three times a week with the class. Extra outside lessons are always encouraged. Homework: this will be related mainly to reading and practice writing. It comes home in their Home Learning book or flash cards. It’s great if it is done but if it is causing a problem, especially when they first start, just leave it and let me know. Parent Help: this is a wonderful asset to the class and if anyone is able to help it would be really appreciated. PMP: Perceptual Motor Programming is a programme the Junior School has initiated to promote learning. This will start in Term 2. School Lunch: Sausages and drinks $2 are available for purchase, from school, on Fridays. Children need to hand an envelope with their money and order to the office, Friday morning. Things we need: Nails, small off cuts of wood, chocolate wrappers, shells, broken jewellery, coloured card, card offcuts, wool, lace, sparkly ‘stuff’ basically anything children can use to create. For more information look on the class website www.omokoroa.school.nz Our classroom aims to be a happy, secure environment for your child to begin their schooling life in. Queries and feedback are very welcome. TERM 1 What we are learning Our unit/topics for the term: Weeks 1-3 Myself and My Family (Health/Art/Literacy) Weeks 4-6 No1. Learner / Hats Week 7-8 Camp / Farm Animals Week 9 Easter Week 10-11 Maori Legend and bubbles Values for the Term ‘Integrity’ (honest, responsibility, act ethically towards self and other) Routines Settling In Before School Your child will be expected to be responsible for all their belongings and be ready to start the day. Please make sure your child is at school with enough time to put their book bag away and their reader into the book box. Then sign in on the computer. Library Books Library Day is Wednesday. Your child is allowed their books for two weeks; however they can bring them back earlier and have them changed at library time. Homework Readers: Your child will have a set reader Monday to Thursday. It is important for you to model reading. Say to your child “Listen to how I read and see if you can try it like that” or “Let’s read this page together.” Your child will also be able to access ‘Reading Eggs’ Home learning: A Home Learning Book will go home on a Monday and is to be returned on a Friday to be marked. Swimming We will be swimming three times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday). The children can also swim at lunchtime if they wish. All children are expected to swim and need to please bring their named togs in a separate waterproof bag. Room 13 has a special relationship with Room 3. They are buddy classes and they meet up once a week and work together with the same partner. This week they were sent on a maths iPad scavenger hunt challenge. The older kids did a great job helping and teaching the younger ones how to use the iPad and were full of positive praise and encouragement. It was very neat to watch and the younger ones loved hanging out with the big kids!
We have been learning about Space. We took photos of ourselves and put them onto the astronauts that we coloured in. Wouldn't it be amazing to fly in a rocket! |
